The gearing system for this game is pretty simple. Each unit has 6 pieces of gear and when you collect them, you can increase the rank, going from 1 to 7 at the time of the release (Korea has more ranks available).
When you upgrade from one rank to the next, you lose all your gear and have to farm for the new set, repeating the process until you get to the highest possible rank.
Overall this is long term progression system, since farming gear is tied to your

You will get bonus stats for EVERYONE on your account based on how many units you have on each rank of gear.
The more units you invest into, the higher the global stat pool becomes.

Obviously, you can also enhance your gear to increase the stat of each individual piece, but this is not recommended.
As a general rule of thumb, here are some guidelines I follow to upgrade gear:
Enhancing is pretty expensive,

So start only with those pieces and then you can slowly move to enhance the rest of the gear when you reach mid to endgame and have more
